Growing and Excelling in Godliness

2 Corinthians 8:7 (NIV), 1Timothy 6:10-11 (NIV)
But just as you excel in everything — in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness and in your love for us-see that you also excel in this grace of giving. *For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs. But you, man of God, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In our first text above, Apostle Paul commended the Corinthian church for their commitment to excellence in their practice and declaration of their faith, their knowledge of God, their zeal for God and their love for the Apostles. These are things that you must deliberately seek to grow and excel in also because they are very valuable to God. In our second text above, Apostle Paul warned Timothy not to allow covetousness for material things cause him to depart from the faith. He admonished him to pursue righteousness, faith, love, endurance and godliness.

In the message from Jesus through John to the Laodicean Church, it was evident that one of the things likely responsible for their lukewarmness was the material riches they had, Rev.3:16-19. The pride and satisfaction that can often result from wealth and material things were serving to hinder their spiritual growth. Do not allow your yearning for or acquisition of material things to stop you from growing and excelling in godliness.

Jesus described the rich fool in Luke 12:16-21 as someone who was laying up treasures for himself but wasn't rich towards God. He wasn't rich in godliness. Instead of being distracted by material things, use the wealth and riches that God has given you to serve Him more. Choose to continue to grow in godliness

PRAYER: Heavenly Father, I desire to keep growing and excelling in godliness. Help me to stay focused and fervent in you.
