An Accomplished Mission
-JOHN 1:1-14
Key Verse:
"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God" (John 1:1).
If the purpose of John the apostle is to prove that Jesus is the Son of God and that all those who believe in Him will have eternal life, then that purpose is powerfully captured in the passage under consideration. Written nearly 100 years after the departure of the Lord to heaven following His death and resurrection and after the destruction of Jerusalem, the gospel settles the argument about the deity of God. John wrote it years before his exile to the Island of Patmos, where the Lord revealed His full identity to him. This experience confirmed in unmistakable terms our Lord's presence in the indivisible Godhead as stated earlier in the Gospel of John 1:1. God intends through this teaching to impress it upon us the ineffable love of a Creator who became man, part of His own creation, in order to save them. By this, shared in the suffering and death we brought upon ourselves through sin. But now, having done that, He has also overcome Satan, sin and death - man's mortal enemies. And now He is offering those who believe in Him and live righteously eternal life. This is His own testimony: "I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?" (John 11:25,26). Only in Christ will you find all that pertain to life and godliness.
Thought for the day: Jesus is God!
