Maintain Your Good Conscience

1Timothy 1:5-6 & 18-19 (NIV)
The goal of this command is love, which comes from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith. Some have wandered away from these and turned to meaningless talk. *Timothy, my son, I give you this instruction in keeping with the prophecies once made about you, so that by following them you may fight the good fight, holding on to faith and a good conscience. Some have rejected these and so have shipwrecked their faith.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Your conscience is the voice of your spirit and it should be in line with the voice of God. Your conscience is good when you have been trained by God's Word to see good and evil the same way God sees them, Heb.5:14. A good conscience does not sit on the fence and is not indecisive about the ways of God and the things of God. A good conscience loves righteousness and hates iniquity, Heb.1:9. A good conscience loves the ways of God and takes the same stand with God at all times; especially in private.

It is not enough to have just faith; we must also maintain a good conscience if we do not want to wreck our lives. Having a good conscience will help us to sincerely draw close to God, Heb.10:22. It will help us to remain sensitive and responsive to God's voice and God's leading. Having a good conscience will also help us to accept and respond well to discipline and correction.

There is a priceless peace that having a good conscience produces in our lives. As we exercise ourselves in God's ways, we will be free from offence both before God and men, Acts 24:16. People may accuse us but they will eventually be ashamed when they are found out to be wrong, 1Pet.3:16.

PRAYER FOCUS: Receive God's strength to draw nearer to Him and to maintain a good conscience by loving Him and following His ways at all times.
