1Peter 2:1-3 Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings, As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby: If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The parable of the sower referenced by Jesus in Matthew 13 reveals why God's Word fails to become implanted in the hearts of God's people in order to produce the kind of fruit it is supposed to. Our text above makes it evident that while there are some attitudes that we need to deliberately lay aside, there are others that we need to deliberately inculcate if we want the Word of God to increase in us and cause us to continually grow. Malice, envy and evil speaking refer to not walking in love, while guile and hypocrisy refer to immoralities and unrighteousness of all kinds. We will be tempted by the attitudes of people and the circumstances of life not to walk in love and to compromise God's ways by engaging in evil. However, we must view these as distractions targeted at weighing us down and affecting our ability to draw nearer to God and to fill ourselves with God's Word.
The major attitude that our text above indicates that we need to fill ourselves with is desire. Desire is what causes you to hold onto God's Word and to meditate on it until you receive its revelation. It is what causes you allow the Word of God to take deep root in you by strong meditation and prayers. Desire is also what causes you to refuse to become offended when trials and tribulations arise as a result of the Word. Desire will also cause you not to be deceived by the deceitfulness of riches and the cares of this world which choke the Word of God out of your heart. It is what causes you to continue to act on the Word of God that you are receiving. Allow the benefits of receiving the Word God (which we studied two days ago) to continue to motivate you to lay aside any worldly desire.
PRAYER FOCUS: Receive God's grace to continue to walk in love and in righteousness and for your desire for God's Word to increase.
