Bogey Of Eternal Security

-JEREMIAH 11:15-23

Key Verse:

"Therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts, Behold, I will punish them: the young men shall die by the sword; their sons and their daugh- ters shall die by famine" (Jeremiah 11:22).

Those who can rightly claim to be God's children are those who fear Him and do His will always. Those who selectively obey Him can never be reckoned as His Children. In verse 15 of our text, God wonders why those who call themselves His beloved would associate with lewdness, interpreted as spiritual fornication, with the heathen. Their purity had deserted them as a result of their affinity with evil people. A Christian can not declare the law and expect its blessedness if he is not keeping the law. He is at best a nominal Christian, denied the power and guidance of the holy spirit as a result of his compromise. In our passage, Israel is also described as having left its former state. The nation was compared to a fine-looking olive tree. But she mingled with corrupt neighbouring nations and stopped being productive. No spiritual fruit was produced again from the tree. It should be uprooted and destroyed according to the ruling of the Almighty. If a person is saved, he must stay under the canopy of the blood- marked environment of holiness. As the children of Israel in Egypt were asked to stay indoors after sprinkling the lamb's blood on their door posts to escape the wrath of the destroyer or forfeit the protection of God, so the Christian can only be secure if he abides in the Lord. Two lessons stand out: The doctrine of eternal security is erroneous. Secondly the true faithful, committed and fearless preacher of the truth of the gospel can never be silent. Stand on the side of the righteous. Faithfully profess the Word and live the life of righteousness. Be earnest in avoiding the ranks of those who selectively serve God, who foolishly believe that God will always wink at their iniquities. They will be shocked in the end.
Thought for the day: God hastens His word in the mouth of His true servants.
