Hold On To God, Not Men

SUNDAY
JUN 19

1Samuel 15:26-27 (GNB), 2Chronicles 16:9a (GNB)
"I will not go back with you," Samuel answered. "You rejected the LORD's command, and he has rejected you as king of Israel." Then Samuel turned to leave, but Saul caught hold of his cloak, and it tore. *The LORD keeps close watch over the whole world, to give strength to those whose hearts are loyal to him.

Author PhotoKing Saul had an unhealthy attachment to men and their opinions at the expense of his attachment to God and God's opinion of him. He seemed to be so conscious of pleasing men that he ended up destroying himself because of it. Even his jealousy and attack on David were stirred up by the praise that David received from the people after he killed Goliath, 1Sam.18:6- 9.

In 1Sam.15:21, Saul used 'the people' as his excuse for not obeying God's instructions. After Samuel told him that God had rejected him and was walking away, he still went after Samuel's garment and tore it. When we try to get from men what we can only get from God, we may end up hurting them. When King Hezekiah was told by Prophet Isaiah that he was going to die, he didn't beg prophet Isaiah. Rather, He turned his face to the wall and prayed unto God, the only One who could change his fate. God immediately gave Prophet Isaiah, who was already on his way out of his palace, a new message of healing and the addition of more years to the King's life (2Kings 20:1-6).

When the council and the high priest no longer wanted Apostle Peter and the other apostles to preach about Christ, their answer was that they would obey God rather than men, Acts 5:29. Who would you rather obey? Who would you rather please? In Matthew 10:28, Jesus said, and fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

PRAYER FOCUS: My heart is continually committed to God. I am attached to God and I depend on Him with all my heart.
