CGMG ABOVE ONLY - AVOIDING THE DEVIL'S BAITS

Avoiding the Devil's Baits

SUNDAY
MAR. 12

Genesis 3:1, 4-6
Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. …*And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil. And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and … pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat.

Author PhotoThe reason that bait works when catching fish is because the bait the fisherman uses is always something the fish likes and it never appears like a trap until the fish is dead. One thing that will help us lay aside every weight and the sin that doth so easily beset us, as Hebrews 12:1 says, is learning how to avoid the devil's baits.

God doesn't want us to be ignorant of the devil's devices. He wants us to always be properly armed against his tricks. There are certain things like pride, bitterness and covetousness that do not appear like sinful traps at first but if we allow them into us they will lead us into sin. Many times believers are more watchful against certain things that clearly look like sin but they are not watchful against these baits of pride, bitterness and covetousness and before they know it, these baits weaken them and lure them into those sins they did not want to indulge themselves in.

To avoid pride, bitterness and covetousness, you must continue to deliberately cultivate humility, walking in love and contentment. You must continue to die to your flesh and walk in the Spirit. The temptation to be proud, bitter and covetous will continue to subtly come your way so you must remain sober and vigilant (alert and self controlled) so you will not be devoured by the devil with these things. Repent immediately and return to God the moment you begin to sense any of these things arising in you. God's grace to avoid the devil's bait is abundant for you. Make use of it.

PRAYER FOCUS: Thank God for the grace to avoid pride, bitterness, covetousness and every other bait of the devil.
