Define Your Love
-JOHN 14:21-31
Key Verse:
"Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him" (John 14:23).
The common maxim of "action speaks louder than words" underscores the import of the message in our text where Jesus repeated for emphasis’ sake in verses 21, 23 and 24 what it takes to say we love God. His message is unequivocal and clear about the fact that the expression of our love for God goes beyond mere profession but entails the practical action of living by the Word. Profession without possession is hypocrisy which the Lord denounces (Luke 6:46). It is contradiction in terms for an individual to say he or she loves Christ only for the heart to be given to the world. True love for God compels the believer to obey not just part of the Bible, but the whole. For such believers, the commandment of Christ through the Bible governs their actions, taste, relationship, possession, lifestyle, conversation and so on. Indeed, the word of God controls every area of their lives including where they go, what they watch, where they work and what they set as priority in life. They will, without apology, be ready to say no to suggestions, temptations, pressures, persuasions and threats that run contrary to Christ’s word because they cherish Him as Lord. They will not mind the cost they have to pay, the loss they can suffer as well as the shame they have to bear for His Name’s sake. Jesus however gave clear promises of great benefits to those who keep His commandments which include fellowship with God, manifestation of His presence, illumination of the spirit, constant peace in a world of turmoil, freedom from fear, freedom from compromise with the prince of "this world", unlimited joy and eternal bliss with God. You should note that the more determined you are to obey the revealed will of God, the more revelation you’ll receive from Him. You have much to gain by obeying God’s commandments if you indeed love Him. Take the bold step, shake off the distractions and join the faithful few.
Thought for the day: If you love Him, you’ll obey Him.
