Don't Despair

-PSALM 74:1-11

Key Verse:

"We see not our signs: there is no more any prophet: neither is there among us any that knoweth how long" (Psalm 74:9).

A society that has no genuine prophets of God is doomed. In many societies all over the world, the devil has succeeded in raising his altar so high that true worship of God is now rare. He succeeded through the instrument of persecution and injection of all forms of perversion in the society. At a time when pastors leave their call of soul-winning for politics and politicians have also stolen their hearts with money, only a handful of genuine men of God are standing. This is an evil time! The children of Israel were sold into slavery by their transgressions. They began to experience things they never did. Enemies desecrated their land; even the sanctuary and synagogue of God were not spared. In the passage, the Psalmist lamented over the ordeals of Israel and called on the Almighty to have mercy. He interceded on behalf of the entire nation and prayed for national deliverance. He recognised that things were not normal. For instance, he said: "They have cast fire unto thy sanctuary; they have defiled by casting down the dwelling place of thy name to the ground. They have burned up all the synagogues of God in the land" (verses 7, 8). The experience of the Israelites is not so different from what happens in many societies today. As believers, we must, like the Psalmist, stand in the gap, pray and make sincere intercession for the deliverance of our country. We must not relent in our supplication. Every sincere believer must determine to be "the last man standing" (if possible), in the midst of a sin-stricken world. We must not be discouraged by the taunting of the wicked one or his blasphemy. The people were taken into captivity; the temple was burned. The Psalmist therefore, called on God to remember His people that He had formerly redeemed from Egyptian captivity and He did.
